Trip Insurance Worth It

Traveling can be a lot of fun, but it’s also full of risks. What if something goes wrong and you have to cancel your trip?

It’s hard enough to save up for a vacation, but if something happens and you have to cancel, you could lose all that money.

Trip insurance can help protect you from losing your investment in case something goes wrong. It can save you a lot of money in the event of an unexpected cancellation, medical emergency, or lost luggage. And the best part is, it usually doesn’t cost very much.

Is Trip Insurance Really Worth It?

If you’re like me, you’re always looking for ways to save money. So when it comes to travel and trip insurance, is it worth it? Many people say yes – that it can be a life saver in case of unexpected events or cancellations. But others argue that the chances of needing trip insurance are slim, and that you can usually find cheaper coverage through your credit card company or other sources.

So what’s the verdict? Is travel or trip insurance worth it? In this post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of both options and help you make an informed decision and decide what’s best for you.

What is Trip Insurance or Travel Insurance?

Trip or travel insurance (pretty much the same thing) is a policy that covers your expenses in case of an unexpected event or cancellation. It can help you save money if something goes wrong and you have to cancel your trip, or if you experience a medical emergency or lose your luggage while on vacation.

It can give you a little peace of mind when you’re traveling and typically doesn’t cost very much.

What does travel insurance really cover?

Before your trip, travel insurance is good to have for covering any pre-paid, nonrefundable trip costs. But, what if something happens while you’re already traveling? Trip insurance, or travel insurance, can be much more than just a form of trip cancellation insurance.

It depends on what type of policy you purchase, but typically, travel insurance covers costs associated with cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and even natural disasters. It can also provide coverage for expenses related to trip delays, missed connections, and rental car damage.

The policies we usually purchase include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • trip cancellation benefits
  • trip interruption coverage
  • travel delay
  • change fees
  • missed tours
  • itinerary changes
  • medical expenses & medical evacuation &/or emergency evacuation
  • baggage & personal effects
  • baggage delay

What is not covered by travel insurance?

In the same way, it depends on what type of policy you purchase. Before you purchase a policy, be sure to read the fine print and make sure that the insurance benefits coverage meets your specific needs.

When should I buy trip insurance?

For international travel or cruise lines, a comprehensive travel insurance plan is a good idea. It can help protect you from losing all the money you’ve invested in your trip if something goes wrong. And if you’re renting a car or traveling to a high-risk destination, travel insurance can provide extra coverage in case of an accident or natural disaster.

When am I less likely to need travel insurance?

If you’re traveling within your own country, or to a destination where the risk of something going wrong is low, you may not need comprehensive travel insurance. Instead, you could purchase medical insurance that would cover you in case of an emergency.

Domestic U.S. Travel

Generally, for domestic travel in the United States, you won’t need to purchase comprehensive travel insurance. Your regular health insurance policy will likely cover you in case of an emergency. However, it’s always a good idea to have medical coverage in case something happens while you’re on vacation.

Having said that, we have purchased travel insurance for trips to Hawaii, as there are more non-refundable costs at stake.

Credit Card Coverage in Certain Instances

Certain credit cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, provide primary rental car protection, if you pay for the rental car with that card. So, if you do something like that, you might not need to have additional rental car coverage on your trip insurance policy (and you might be able to waive the coverage that the car rental agency offers you).

Individual Component Insurance Offers

Some individual components of your travel might offer their own insurance policies. For example, an airline might offer flight insurance for your tickets, or an excursion company might offer insurance for your guided day trip.

This type of insurance is often quite costly, and many of these things might be sufficiently covered with comprehensive plan travel insurance. So, once again, it’s important to know what kinds of coverage you need, weigh your options, and read the fine print before purchasing a policy.

What about Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage?

One optional coverage that I always add to our travel insurance policy is Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage. This allows us to literally cancel our trip for any reason.

This type of coverage typically costs an extra 10-15% of your total policy, and there are some restrictions. For example, you typically have to cancel at least 48 hours in advance, and you may not be able to use CFAR for trips that are already underway. In addition, you typically need to add the CFAR provision within 21 days of making your first payment on the trip.

CFAR coverage usually won’t reimburse 100%, but 75% of your trip costs (or whatever the policy states) is better than 0%!

But, if you want coverage for unforeseen things that might come up, this type of coverage can be really helpful.

How Much Does Trip Insurance Cost?

The cost of trip insurance varies depending on a number of factors, including the length and destination of your trip, the type of travel insurance policy you purchase, and the age of each family member. Typically, comprehensive travel insurance costs between 5% and 8% of the total cost of your trip.

For example, if you’re going on a $5,000 trip, you can expect to pay between $250 and $400 for travel insurance.

If you don’t feel like adding the extra cost of travel insurance, just think about how it would feel to lose all of your trip deposits instead. That wouldn’t be such a good deal!

Is trip protection worth the money?

If you don’t want to lose all your investment in case something goes wrong, then the answer is yes – trip insurance is worth it. It can help protect you from losing money if you have to cancel your trip or experience a medical emergency. And for the most part, it doesn’t cost very much.

The bottom line is that it’s important to do your research and decide what’s best for you.

How to Choose the Best Trip Insurance Policy for Your Needs

The way to find the best trip insurance policy is to use a comparison tool to find the best rates. In addition, it is important to read the policy carefully to make sure that the coverage meets your needs.

My favorite travel insurance comparison site offers policies from multiple travel insurance companies, so you can find the best policy for your trip at the best price. You enter the details of your trip, and the site will present specific plans that are available for your vacation plans.

Their “mission…is to make it easy for travelers to compare and buy travel insurance online from top rated providers. We only work with providers that offer a range of high quality plans, 24/7 emergency assistance to travelers, and excellent customer service.”

SBT Summary: Is Trip Insurance Worth It?

At the end of the day, is trip insurance worth it for you? That’s a question only you can answer (although I think it’s an important thing to consider when making your travel plans). Weigh out the cost of the policy against your potential losses, and see if it makes sense for your particular situation. As long as you understand what’s covered and what isn’t, and are comfortable with the company you’re buying from, I say go for it! Just don’t forget to read the fine print.
