HI THERE! DON’T FORGET TO PIN THIS FOR LATER!

Unusual Things to Pack

Unusual Things to Pack

Packing for a trip can be a real head-scratcher. You’ve got your usual suspects – clothes, toiletries, phone charger. But what about those quirky items that could save your bacon in a pinch?

Unusual items to pack can make your vacation smoother and more enjoyable. Think outside the suitcase! A shower curtain might seem bonkers, but it could be your impromptu picnic blanket or rain shield.

Remember, the best travelers are prepared for anything. So, let’s dive into some wacky but wonderful packing ideas that’ll have you traveling like a pro.

The Power Essentials

Don’t let your devices die on vacation! Pack these power must-haves to stay charged and connected. You’ll be the envy of your travel companions when you whip out these clever gadgets.

Plug Adapters & Voltage

In many countries around the world, the power outlets and voltage are different from what you’re used to at home. Don’t get caught with a dead phone or laptop – pack a plug adapter!

Find one that has attachments for every plug configuration the world over!

Dual-voltage hair dryer: If you’re traveling from country to country, the voltage for hair dryers can be different. Dual-voltage will make sure it works in every country.

Tech Tidbits for Staying Charged

Portable Power Bank: A portable power bank is your new best friend. Toss one in your bag and never stress about a dead phone again. Get one with multiple USB ports to charge several devices at once.

Charging Hub: Want to be a real travel hero? Pack a full-size power strip, or even better, a 6-port charging hub. It’s a game-changer in hotel rooms with limited outlets. You’ll be everyone’s favorite when you can charge all the family’s gadgets at once.

Don’t forget extra batteries, or rechargeable batteries and a portable charger, for your camera or other devices. Nothing’s worse than missing that perfect shot because of a dead battery!

Clever Cable Management

Tangled cords? Not on your watch! Invest in some cable organizers to keep your cords neat and tidy. Your bag will thank you.

Longer charging cables are a lifesaver. You’ll appreciate that extra reach when the outlet is just out of reach of your bed or comfy chair or airplane seat.

Again, consider a multi-port USB charger. It’s compact and lets you charge multiple devices with just one outlet. Perfect for those hotel rooms with limited plugs!

Semi-Budget Travel Pro Tip!

Label your cords with washi tape. No more playing “whose charger is this?” with the family. You’re welcome!

Unexpected Travel Lifesavers

Pack smart and you’ll be ready for anything! These little gems can save the day when you least expect it. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later for bringing along these tiny treasures.

Tiny Tools for Big Functionality

Sewing Kit: Ever been caught with a loose button? A small sewing kit can be your fashion superhero. Toss in some safety pins too – they’re like magic wands for quick fixes.

Binder Clips: They aren’t just for the office. Use them to keep your curtains closed for better sleep or to seal that bag of snacks. Genius, right?

Zip Ties: Don’t forget zip ties! They can secure your luggage, fix a broken strap, or even childproof cabinets in your rental. Talk about versatile!

Numbered Zip Ties for Luggage

Flashlight: A small flashlight is a must. You’ll be grateful when you’re digging through your bag in a dimly lit hotel room or taking a late-night stroll. Many people can use their phone to cover this one these days!

Multipurpose Marvels

Duct tape (or blue tape!) – it’s not just for ducts! This wonder-tape can patch holes, make temporary luggage tags, or even remove lint in a pinch.

Quick-drying towels are a traveler’s best friend. They’re perfect for impromptu swims or as a makeshift picnic blanket.

Compression socks aren’t just for grandma anymore. They’ll keep your legs feeling fresh during long flights or sightseeing marathons.

Essential oils can freshen up musty rooms, soothe headaches, or help you relax after a long day of adventures. A little dab’ll do ya!

Silicone wedding rings are great for active travelers. You can hit the beach or go hiking without worrying about losing your precious metal band.

Blue Lagoon Iceland Groove Rings

Plastic Bags

Sometimes any plastic bag will do, and sometimes you need something a little more specific.

Like a bag for your dirty shoes, or one to keep your wet clothes or dirty clothes separate from the clean, dry ones.

Reusable plastic bags are not only environmentally friendly, but they come in all sorts of different sizes and shapes for all your travel needs.

But don’t overlook those flimsy grocery store bags either! They’re perfect for packing shoes or keeping any liquids that might leak contained.

And let’s not forget about the ziploc bag – they’re great for organizing small items like chargers, toiletries, or first aid supplies. Use them until they wear out. Don’t throw them away if they aren’t ruined. Just make a “bag of bags” in a pocket of your suitcase, and you’ll always have a bunch at the ready when a need arises.

My absolute favorite is simplehuman’s C-size bags. They’re perfect for just about everything, and they come in a handy little pack you can take just about anywhere.

First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, even on vacation. Pack a compact first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and allergy medication.

You never know when a headache or an allergic reaction might strike.

It’s also a good idea to include any necessary prescription medications in your first aid kit as well.

It’s always better to have something and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Other items for your first aid kit:

Comfort and Cleanliness Companions

Packing smart means bringing items that keep you comfy and clean on the go. These little extras can make a big difference in your travel experience.

Hygiene Helpers for Happy Travels

Hand Wipes: You’ll feel fresh as a daisy with these nifty additions to your suitcase. Toss in some disposable hand wipes for quick clean-ups. They’re perfect for wiping down airplane trays or sticky fingers after ice cream.

Trash Bags: Don’t forget a stash of trash bags. Simplehuman C-size bags work perfectly here. They’re lifesavers for wet swimsuits or muddy shoes.

Dryer Sheets: Pop a few dryer sheets in your luggage to keep things smelling sweet.

Face masks are a must-have these days. Pack extras to stay safe and comfy.

Baby Powder: And let’s not forget the unsung hero of travel hygiene – baby powder. It’s great for freshening up between showers or tackling sandy toes.

Flip flops are your best friends in hotel showers or public pools. Keep those tootsies clean and fungus-free!

Soft Touches for Cozy Journeys

Reusable Shopping Bag: Comfort is key when you’re on the move. A packable tote bag, or reusable shopping bag, is perfect for impromptu shopping trips or beach days. It folds up tiny but expands to hold all your goodies.

Pack Towel: Bring a camping towel for unexpected spills or dips. They’re super absorbent and dry quickly.

Hotel Safety: A hotel room door stopper adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind. Sleep tight, knowing you’re safe and sound.

BYO-Drinks: And if you’re feeling fancy, pack a bottle of wine. It’s perfect for unwinding after a long day of sightseeing. Just remember to check local laws about transporting alcohol!

Portable Fan

A constant travel companion these days is my portable fan. It’s a lifesaver in hot and stuffy hotel rooms.

It amazes me how often hotel room air conditioning (and heating, for that matter) doesn’t work very well. My Venty portable travel fan provides the cool airflow I need to get to sleep.

It also doubles as a night light and triples as one of our portable power banks.

Nifty Navigational Aids

Don’t get lost in the shuffle! These smart gadgets and savvy solutions will keep you on track during your globetrotting adventures.

Smart Solutions for Directionally Gifted Globetrotters

Download Offline Maps: Ever found yourself wandering aimlessly in a foreign city? Fear not, intrepid traveler! Your smartphone is about to become your new BFF. Download Offline Maps before you jet off – they’re a lifesaver when Wi-Fi is as elusive as a unicorn.

Travel Router: Feeling extra fancy? Treat yourself to a travel router. It’s like having your own personal internet bubble wherever you roam. Just don’t forget to pack your own power strip – hotel rooms can be stingy with outlets!

Semi-Budget Travel Pro Tip!

Snag an international driving permit if you’re planning to hit the road. Check your local AAA office for more information.

Savvy Gadgets for Luggage

Apple AirTags: Lost luggage? Not on your watch! Apple AirTags are your secret weapon against misplaced bags. Pop one in your suitcase and track it like a boss. (Make sure to bring extra button batteries.)

Luggage Scale: Before you pack, weigh your bags with a luggage scale. It’s cheaper than those nasty overweight fees at the airport!

Coffee Service

Morning coffee is a non-negotiable for many travelers. But going to a local coffee shop every morning can be a hassle and expensive. Avoid the inconvenience and expense by packing your own portable coffee setup.

A travel coffee setup is a game-changer. No more settling for mediocre hotel brews!

Get your water hot with a dual-voltage travel kettle. Pack some delicious instant espresso. Bring your travel-friendly creamer of choice: super sweet, or oat milk based.

Even if you’re not camping, a collapsible coffee mug and titanium spoon will complete your setup.

Travel Coffee Set-Up

Convenient Carry-On Couture

Pack smart and look sharp with these unexpected travel essentials. You’ll be ready for anything while turning heads in the security line.

Stylish Stowaways for the Fashion-Forward Voyager

Clear Purse: Who says practicality can’t be chic? Swap your boring black carry-on for a clear purse (especially if you’re headed to an NFL game) that’ll speed you through security checks. Plus, you’ll never lose your lip gloss in the depths of your bag again!

Compression Socks: Ditch those ratty old sweatpants and slip on some compression socks instead. Your legs will thank you, and no one will guess you’re wearing flight-friendly footwear.

Packable Tote Bag: Don’t forget your trusty packable tote bag. It folds up tiny but expands to hold all your duty-free purchases. Talk about a fashionable Mary Poppins moment!

Titanium Utensils: For the eco-conscious traveler, titanium utensils are your new best friend. They’re lightweight, sleek, and will save you from flimsy plastic forks at the airport food court. (Just make sure to pack the titanium knife in your checked bag. I forgot to once and almost had it taken away at Heathrow.)

Blue Tape & Sharpie Pen: Don’t forget to pack a sharpie pen and some blue tape. They’re perfect for labeling your reusable water bottle or creating impromptu luggage tags in a pinch.

More Unusual Things to Pack

Hair Catcher: Avoid clogged hotel sinks and showers with a handy hair catcher. It’s small, lightweight, and will save you from any awkward maintenance calls.

Solar Charger: Stay charged and connected on the go with a portable solar charger. Perfect for keeping your devices charged when there are no outlets in sight, it’s a must-have for any tech-savvy traveler.

Pre-Packaged Vitamins: Keep your immune system strong on the road with pre-packaged vitamins. No more dragging around bulky bottles, just grab and go for a healthy dose of nutrients.

Collapsible Toiletry Bottles: Save precious space in your toiletry bag with collapsible pouches. They’re perfect for storing shampoo, conditioner, and other liquids without taking up too much room.

Small Dry Bag: Protect your valuables from water damage with a small dry bag. It’s perfect for beach trips, water sports, or even just to keep your phone safe during unexpected rain showers.

Personal Safety Alarm: Stay safe while traveling solo with a personal safety alarm. Loud and easy to activate, it can help deter potential attackers or alert others in case of an emergency.

Travel Step Stool: A compact travel step stool can make all the difference, especially for shorter travelers. It’s great for those long flights in economy and for helping kids wash their hands.

Multi-Pocket Coin Purse: Keep all your different currencies organized and easily accessible with a multi-pocket coin purse.

Glasses Straps: Don’t lose your sunglasses or reading glasses while on the go with a handy glasses strap. It’s an easy way to keep your eyewear secure next time you go whitewater rafting!

Poo-pourri: Let’s not forget about our basic needs while traveling. Keep your bathroom visits discreet and smell-free with Poo-pourri, a pre-toilet spray that eliminates odors.

Costco Membership Card: If you’re a member of Costco, be sure to bring your card with you while traveling. You never know when you’ll need to stock up on snacks or other essentials at one of their many locations around the world.

Travel Washcloth and/or Face Towel: Many hotels around the world only provide bath towels. If you’re used to having a washcloth and/or face towel, pack your own.

Laundry Detergent for Sensitive Skin: Don’t let sensitive skin ruin your travel plans. Bring along these laundry detergent sheets specifically designed for those with sensitivities.

Voice Amplifier: Traveling with a group or leading a tour? Don’t strain your voice trying to be heard. Use a portable voice amplifier to make sure everyone can hear you clearly. Plus, it’s fun!

Luggage Stool: Don’t put your luggage on the hotel bed or floor. Use a luggage stool to keep it off the ground and make packing and unpacking easier on your back.

Anti-Theft Bags: Keep your belongings safe and secure with anti-theft bags (Pacsafe is our favorite brand) that come equipped with special features like slash-proof straps, RFID blocking pockets, and locking zippers.

Waterproof Spray on Shoes: Planning on exploring in wet or muddy areas? Protect your shoes and keep your feet dry with a waterproof spray. Plus, it’s a great way to extend the life of your favorite pair of shoes.

Potty Set-Up for Road Trips: If you’re hitting the road for a long journey, make sure you have a potty set-up. A portable potty system can come in handy for those emergency pit stops.

Portable Neck Fan: Don’t let the heat ruin your vacation. Stay cool and comfortable with a portable neck fan that you can take with you on all your outdoor adventures.

White Noise Track on Your Phone: Trouble sleeping in a new place? Download a white noise track on your phone to help you get some shut-eye and drown out any unfamiliar noises.
