Type
Quick-Service Kopitiam (“Coffee Shop”) Chain
Overview
We ate breakfast here 2 out of our 3 mornings in Singapore.
Eating at a kopitiam (“coffee shop”), even at a chain like Toast Box, is the quintessential place to eat breakfast in Singapore.
Toast Box started in October 2005 as a single food stall unit. They’ve now expanded to over 70 outlets across Singapore, as well as Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.
The manner in which the food preparers at Toast Box work is fun to watch. They are very demonstrative, especially when pouring kopi by raising the carafe as high as possible in the air & finding their mark in the mugs.
Patrons are expected to know what they want to order & not ask a lot of questions. For us, this was actually a fun part of the experience. Payment was quick and efficient.
This particular Toast Box location had seating inside the store, as well as just outside the entrance, in the mall area of Chinatown Point. On both visits, we found a place to sit without a problem.
Location
This Toast Box location is just inside one of the main entrances of Chinatown Point. Access is very easy.
From our hotel (Bliss Hotel Singapore), Toast Box is less than 5 minutes on foot. It was a convenient way for us to start our day. After breakfast, it was just steps to the Chinatown MRT station, to continue our adventure.
Food
When researching places to eat breakfast in Singapore, kopi (all varieties) and kaya toast rise to the top. Although Toast Box is a chain, their efficient and flavorful preparation is worth it. We were just scratching the surface of their menu with what we ordered. They have a large variety of toasts, beverages, and other food items (including nasi lemak, a traditional Malay dish).
If we had been near a Toast Box location every day of our 2-week trip, I would’ve been just fine having Kopi C and kaya toast for breakfast every day. That’s how much I enjoyed this Singapore tradition.
Clientele
Toast Box is definitely for everyone! We saw business people stopping for a quick kopi & toast on the way to work. We saw young families & friends gathering for breakfast. And, of course, we were tourists!
My Favorite Part
I had been planning for our trip for the better part of a year. On my “must try” list were Kopi C and kaya toast. Toast Box did not disappoint! The Kopi C was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of milk and sweetness. Toast Box’s kaya toast was perfect! Toasty bread with sweet kaya spread (coconut jam) and a slab of butter…yum!
My Least Favorite Part
Why, oh why, oh why, did we not purchase jars of Toast Box’s kaya spread to bring home?!?!? Don’t make this same mistake!
