May in Aspen is a magical time when nature bursts into bloom.
Enjoy the serene beauty of Maroon Bells and the thrilling drive through Independence Pass, both offering delightful opportunities to soak in the spectacular outdoors without the crowds.
Stroll Around Maroon Bells
Maroon Bells is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado. The stunning twin peaks reflect perfectly on Maroon Lake, creating a picturesque scene.

As the snow melts, wildflowers begin to peek through, adding pops of color to your hike.

Driving Independence Pass is a must-do as spring unfolds. The road reopens late May, providing a scenic drive over the Continental Divide.
The views from this route are breathtaking, with snow-capped peaks and budding green landscapes.
Make stops along the way to take in different viewpoints and capture stunning photographs.
Caution: the drive can be narrow and winding, so it’s important to drive carefully. Check for any road updates before you head out.

Adventures on the Trail
Aspen in May offers countless outdoor activities, especially for hiking and biking enthusiasts.
Whether trekking through the Rocky Mountains or cycling along the scenic Rio Grande Trail, adventure awaits.
Hiking the Rocky Mountains
Aspen sits at the base of the majestic Rocky Mountains, inviting adventure seekers to explore its extensive hiking trails.
In May, the temperatures range from 27°F to 63°F, making it a fantastic time to hike without the summer heat or winter snow.
Maroon Bells is a highlight, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, and reflective lakes.
The Maroon Bells Scenic Loop Trail is an easy, 1.9-mile hike. That sounds about right to me!
Be sure to pack layers, as weather can change quickly in the mountains.
Biking Along the Rio Grande Trail
The Rio Grande Trail is perfect for biking enthusiasts of all skill levels. This 42-mile trail runs from Aspen to Glenwood Springs, following the old Rio Grande Railway route.
The trail winds through picturesque landscapes, featuring lush meadows, dense forests, and the Roaring Fork River.
It’s a relatively flat path, making it accessible even for beginners.
Mountain biking trails are also plentiful in the Aspen Snowmass area.
Rent bikes from local shops or bring your own to enjoy a ride through one of Colorado’s most stunning valleys.
Remember to carry plenty of water and snacks, wear proper gear, and take breaks to soak in the stunning views.

Relaxation and Wellness
Aspen in May isn’t just about adventure; it’s also about relaxation and wellness. Treat yourself to the famous soothing waters in Glenwood Springs, CO.
Indulge in Glenwood Hot Springs
Just a short drive away, Glenwood Hot Springs is a great place to truly relax.
Famous for its large hot springs pool, you can soak in naturally heated mineral waters that promise to melt your stress away.
Imagine yourself soaking in the world’s largest hot springs pool with the stunning backdrop of the Colorado Rockies.
Nearby, you can also find the Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves, where you can revel in a unique underground steam bath experience. This is a perfect spot for anyone needing a wellness break.
Iron Mountain Hot Springs
Also located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Iron Mountain Hot Springs offers 16 different mineral pools to choose from, plus 11 more for adults only.
It kinda reminds me of The Springs Resort in Pagosa, Springs, CO, which is also right along a river (the San Juan River).
These thermal pools range in temperature from 98-108 degrees Fahrenheit and are surrounded by beautiful views of the Colorado River and rocky cliffs. It’s a serene escape not too far from Aspen.
Ride to the Skies
Experience the beauty of Aspen from above, whether you’re gliding up Aspen Mountain or soaring over the Roaring Fork Valley. These adventures offer breathtaking views and unique perspectives.
Silver Queen Gondola Excursion
Take the Silver Queen Gondola for a ride to the top of Aspen Mountain. The gondola journey is smooth and comfortable, providing you with stunning views of the mountain peaks and the quaint town below.
At the top, you can enjoy lunch at the Sundeck Restaurant, basking in the sunshine while taking in the scenery.
Don’t forget your camera; the panoramic vistas are perfect for memorable photos.
Balloon Adventures over the Roaring Fork Valley
For a truly exhilarating experience, take a hot air balloon ride over the Roaring Fork Valley. This adventure gives you a bird’s-eye view of the lush landscapes, winding rivers, and majestic mountains.
The gentle ascent and descent make it an ideal activity for most people, including families.
Balloon rides are often scheduled early in the morning when the air is calm, enhancing your enjoyment of the serene environment.
As you float gracefully across the sky, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views that you can’t get any other way.
It’s a perfect outing for capturing magical moments and appreciating the natural beauty of Aspen from a different perspective.
Outdoor Sports Unleashed
Aspen in May offers a variety of outdoor sports that cater to both adventure seekers and those who prefer a more relaxing day in nature.
Fishing on the Roaring Fork River
For fishing enthusiasts, the Roaring Fork River is a must-visit. The river is famous for its catch-and-release policy, which means it’s well-stocked with healthy fish like trout.
Grab your fishing gear and get ready for a peaceful day by the water.
You can fish from the riverbank or, for a more immersive experience, consider fly fishing. Several local outfitters offer guided tours that are perfect for both novices and experienced anglers.
The knowledgeable guides will show you the best spots to cast your line.
The Roaring Fork also provides a unique backdrop for fishing amidst the beauty of nature. Whether you’re here for the sport or the serenity, you won’t be disappointed.
White Water Rafting
With high water levels from snow melt, spring is the ideal time to try out white water rafting in Aspen.
Aspen Whitewater Rafting offers mild, adventurous, and wild trips down the river for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.
They have options for everyone, from families with young kids to thrill-seekers looking for an adrenaline rush.
You’ll navigate through rapids and take in stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
And don’t worry – professional guides will be there to ensure your safety while still providing an exhilarating experience.
Mini Golf
Aspen’s only mini golf option can be found at CP Burger.
Food, milkshakes, and mini golf! Sounds like a great combination to me!
How to Get to Aspen
Aspen has its own airport (ASE), so it is possible to fly to Aspen. It is, of course, a small airport.
Flights are limited, and the number of direct flights is few, and of course, it can be pricey.
Flying into Denver International Airport (DEN) will provide you with many more options.
The drive to Aspen from Denver, however, is at least 4 hours, and you’ll have to rent a car or take a shuttle.
Getting to Aspen via a road trip is how we made it happen.
Then, we had our own vehicle and didn’t have to rely on flight schedules. Sometimes it’s nice to just have your own car!
It is possible to access Aspen from the southeast, via Independence Pass. However, that route is closed in the winter months.
More likely, you’ll arrive from the northwest, via the junction at Glenwood Springs.
Where to Stay in Aspen in May
Aspen’s not cheap, y’all!
While there are many fantastic properties to choose from in Aspen, most of them are significantly out of our semi-budget travel price range.
Even the ones that don’t reach the pricing stratosphere are stretching our budget quite a bit.
📍 Limelight Hotel Aspen
I recommend the Limelight Hotel Aspen.
The rooms are bright and updated, and the location is perfect.
You can easily walk to downtown Aspen from this hotel, and the view of the surrounding mountains is spectacular.
The Limelight Hotel has a heated outdoor pool and not just one hot tub, but two.
PLUS: The breakfast buffet is included!!!!!
Aspen’s Off-Off-Season
While Aspen’s winter season is where it’s at for skiing and snowboarding, and the summer months are full of festivals and activities, Aspen is also a great place to take the family in the off-season.
If you haven’t been to Aspen in the off-season, I highly recommend it.
It’s a great place for kids – and adults!
There are so many things to do year-round in this ski town that don’t involve snow sports, like visiting a museum or taking a walk around town.
Our young children had a great time exploring a new park and playground every day!
You can also explore some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Colorado right outside your door.
And the best part is that many of these activities will cost you less than they would during ski season!
Our visit to Aspen was in mid-May, just before the warmer months.
Truth be told, many shops, restaurants, and activities were closed.
We practically had the town to ourselves!
So, if you’re wanting to visit Aspen when the prices are most affordable, you might have to forego some of the other things you want to do, see, and eat…because they might be closed in the “off-off-season.”
Most things start back up for Aspen’s summer season, beginning around Memorial Day and into June.
But, in the off-off-season, the town is quiet, and the prices are much lower.
You can still enjoy much of what Aspen has to offer but without the crowds.
