Our Experience at the Great Basin Astronomy Festival

If you’re looking for an out-of-this-world experience, the Great Basin Astronomy Festival is definitely worth checking out. Coinciding with the New Moon each September (moonless nights are best for night sky viewing), the annual astronomy festival attracts astronomy buffs from all over the world. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced astronomer, there’s something for everyone at this festival.

Most of the activities take place at or nearby the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. A shuttle is provided for park visitors from the Great Basin Visitor Center, which is handy if the parking lot at Lehman is full.

Great weather is essential, and clear daytime skies can disappear fast. When late afternoon thunderstorms moved into the area, we weren’t too happy.

Doesn’t the weather know this festival only happens once a year?!?!?

We did enjoy watching the storm, though, while eating our packed-in picnic dinner.

As darkness began to approach, the Lehman Caves Visitor Center was lit up with red lights. Why red lights? Well, supposedly, red light preserves your night vision in the dark night skies!

Would you believe that the massive thunderstorms cleared out in time for the evening’s events?!? As soon as the moon set behind these mountains, the unobstructed night sky was aglow with all sorts of celestial bodies!

While the sun is out in the daytime, safe solar telescopes are setup for solar viewing.

The real magic begins when the moon sets. Follow the path of the glow-in-the-dark stars!

Each night of the festival, amateur astronomers setup their telescopes for public viewing, near the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. This provides an up close opportunity for anyone interested in learning about different planets, stars, and galaxies (and other deep sky objects!)!

From the telescope viewing area, a pathway leads to the Astronomy Amphitheater, where further ranger programs take place.

It was here, at the evening Constellation Talk, that we saw the Milky Way Galaxy with the naked eye! It was so clear and visible that it almost seemed unreal. This was my favorite part of the festival.

The National Park Service ranger that was presenting also pointed out several constellations and named stars. It was a star gazing session with narration!

You don’t need to bring much with you for the nighttime telescope viewing. All we really needed was warm clothing and a red LED flashlight to see where we were going.

Why the red LED again? To preserve your night vision!

Speaking of where you stay…the closest town to the entrance of Great Basin National Park is Baker, Nevada. Baker is small. If you want to stay that close, there are a few lodging options in Baker, but there are no “name brand” hotels.

Camping is also available in and around the park.

In Great Basin National Park, you can choose from a variety of campgrounds such as Wheeler Peak Campground, Upper Lehman Creek Campground, and Lower Lehman Creek Campground. These locations provide a more rustic experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the park, while participating in the astronomy festival events. Keep in mind, campgrounds can fill up quickly, so consider making your reservations early.
