Best Time to Visit
Iceland’s Golden Circle offers stunning scenery and natural wonders year-round. Each season has its unique attractions:
- Summer: With nearly 24-hour daylight, you’ll have ample time to explore, and the lush green landscapes create picturesque views. Summer is also the best time to spot puffins and other wildlife.
- Fall: During this season, the foliage transforms into vibrant hues of yellow, orange, and red, providing a striking backdrop for your self-drive tour. Fall is also a less-crowded time for visiting the Golden Circle. (We visited Iceland in early October.)
- Winter: Although daylight is limited, the snow-covered landscapes and the chance to see the Northern Lights make visiting during winter worthwhile. Ensure you feel confident driving on icy roads, and check weather conditions frequently.
- Spring: As the snow melts, the waterfalls in the region become particularly powerful, making it an excellent time to visit. Spring also sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful experience.
Choosing the Right Car
Selecting the right car for your Golden Circle self-drive tour will depend on the time of year, road conditions, and your comfort level. Generally, a small car is suitable for driving on the well-maintained roads of the Golden Circle during summer and fall.
However, if you plan to visit during winter or spring, or explore off the beaten path, a 4×4 vehicle can provide better traction and safety.
For a hassle-free experience, consider booking your car rental from a reputable provider in Reykjavík. Keep in mind that cars with manual transmissions are generally more affordable in Iceland, but automatic options are available.
Our preference is Blue Car Rental at the Reykjavik airport. They are within walking distance of the terminal, their rental car prices include all the special insurance policies that are recommended in Iceland, and they switch to studded tires on all their cars in the winter season. You’ll have everything you need for your road trip around Iceland.
We had no problems with Blue Car Rental. We were given the type of car that we had reserved, plus the 2 booster seats that we had reserved ahead of time as well.

Be cautious around sharp bends, as well as on narrow and gravel roads. Remember, Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s crucial to be prepared and drive according to the conditions.

We recommend, in general, a clockwise route when exploring the Golden Circle. This will take you from Reykjavík to Þingvellir National Park, then onto the other highlights, before heading back to Reykjavík.

Þingvellir (or Thingvellir) National Park is a must-visit destination on your Golden Circle itinerary. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it holds significant cultural, historical, and geological importance. The park is located in a rift valley, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart.
This unique location allows you to walk between the two continents at the Silfra fissure. Thingvellir is also home to Iceland’s first parliament, making it an essential stop to learn about the country’s history.
As your first stop, start at the Visitor Center (park in the ample parking lot), and then decide which parts of the national park you’d like to explore further.
We didn’t even scratch the surface of what Thingvellir has to offer, but this one-day itinerary is focused on the highlights!
2) Ice Cream at Efstidalur
As you continue your drive, make sure to stop at Efstidalur for a delicious ice cream break. This family-run farm boasts mouth-watering homemade ice cream, offering you a chance to indulge in a sweet treat and experience Icelandic hospitality.
Enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding countryside while you savor your ice cream. And yes, we enjoyed our ice cream whilst wearing our Icelandic coats, long underwear, and beanies!
3) Gullfoss Waterfall
The majestic Gullfoss Waterfall is another must-see attraction on your Golden Circle tour. The powerful waterfall flows through a canyon, plunging into two tiers before disappearing into the Hvítá River. Witness the beauty of Iceland’s natural landscapes as you marvel at the cascading water and capture breathtaking photos.
4) Icelandic Horses
Icelandic horses are renowned for their strength, stamina, and unique gait called tölt. As you drive the Golden Circle, you will likely spot these friendly and majestic creatures grazing in nearby pastures or even offering rides at select attractions.
Take the opportunity to meet them and perhaps snap some photos of these enchanting animals. You can tell, however, that I wasn’t getting too close!
5) Lunch at Fridheimar
Stop at Fridheimar for a unique dining experience in a geothermal greenhouse. The restaurant specializes in fresh tomato-based dishes, utilizing the tomatoes grown right there in the greenhouse. You’ll enjoy a delightful meal while learning about Iceland’s innovative methods of harnessing geothermal energy for farming.
I recommend the all-you-can-eat tomato soup and fresh baked bread! The bread was some of the best, moist, dense baked dough that I’ve ever had! Paired with Icelandic butter just puts it over the top!
Be sure to make a reservation in advance!
6) Geysir Geothermal Area
Located in the Haukadalur valley, the Geysir Geothermal Area is famous for its geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud ponds. Strokkur, Iceland’s most active geyser, erupts every 8 to 10 minutes, reaching heights of 25-35 meters.
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the incredible force of nature. Be patient, and have your camera ready and set to video!
7) Skalholt
Skalholt, a historical site and former bishops’ residence, played a significant role in the development of Christianity in Iceland. Explore the tranquil grounds, modern church, and archaeological excavations to gain a deeper understanding of Iceland’s religious history.
This is also a fantastic spot to see some of Iceland’s turf houses!
8) Kerid Crater
Finally, make sure to visit Kerið Crater, a volcanic crater lake with striking red and green landscapes. The relatively young geological formation, estimated to be around 6,500 years old, offers panoramic views and a unique perspective on Iceland’s volcanic past.

A Day Trip
The Golden Circle self-drive itinerary can be completed in a single day. Depending on your exact route, the driving distance is approximately 230 kilometers (143 miles), and it takes just over 3 hours to drive straight through the entire route.
This allows you to visit major attractions like the Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall, and Thingvellir National Park, as well as other interesting sights along the way.
While it’s doable in a day trip, it’s crucial to set an early start and allocate sufficient time to explore each attraction. Remember that the 3-hour estimate is for pure driving time, excluding time spent at the sights.
To make the most of your day, plan for at least 6 hours, but aiming for a full day gives you better flexibility to enjoy everything at a comfortable pace.
We were able to accomplish this entire one-day itinerary in just that…one day!
Multiple Days
While we’re focusing on a one-day itinerary, if you prefer not to rush through the Golden Circle, a multiple-day itinerary is also an option.
With more time at your disposal, you can enjoy a more relaxed pace, taking time to discover lesser-known attractions, and even book day tours for activities like snorkeling in Silfra Fissure or a snowmobile adventure.
Spending two or more days on the Golden Circle also gives you an opportunity to stay overnight in local hotels, guesthouses, or other accommodations, allowing you to experience the Icelandic countryside more intimately.
By extending your trip, you can also choose the best time to visit each attraction, timed with the optimal weather and crowd conditions.
