Eclipse Travel

Eclipse Travel

Embarking on an eclipse travel adventure combines the thrills of exploration with the awe-inspiring experience of witnessing a total solar eclipse.

Each eclipse presents a unique opportunity to not only see one of the universe’s grand spectacles but to immerse yourself in the culture and natural beauty of diverse locations around the globe.

The key to a successful eclipse trip is planning.

Understanding the path of the upcoming solar eclipse and aligning it with your travel interests requires forethought.

You want a prime viewing location and the necessary equipment to experience totality — that enthralling moment when the moon completely obscures the sun, turning day into night for a brief, magical interval.

Eclipse Day Essentials

To fully embrace Eclipse Day, your preparation must be as precise as the moon’s shadow racing across Earth.

Here’s the lowdown on the absolute must-haves for your celestial rendezvous.

Viewing Equipment and Safety

You wouldn’t stare at the sun on a regular afternoon, so don’t underestimate the sun’s power during an eclipse.

Your top tip: snag a pair of ISO 12312-2 certified solar eclipse glasses.

Without these, the full experience isn’t just incomplete; it’s unsafe. While the total eclipse phase is eye-safe, the minutes before and after demand protection. And don’t forget, your camera needs a solar filter too.

  • Do:
    • Use eclipse glasses during partial phases
    • Equip cameras with solar filters
  • Don’t:
    • Glimpse the eclipse with the naked eye
    • Overlook safety for “just a second”

LUNT Solar Eclipse Glasses

Experience the awe of solar eclipses safely with LUNT Solar Eclipse Glasses, designed to offer unbeatable clarity and protection, making every celestial event a breathtaking spectacle.

Weather Conditions and Contingencies

Sure, you’ve planned for clear skies on Eclipse Day, but Mother Nature might have other plans.

Keep an eye on weather conditions leading up to the day of the eclipse and have a backup plan.

  • Checklist:
    • Alternate viewing location options
    • Flexible travel plans to dodge cloudy forecasts

Maximizing the Eclipse Experience

When the day turns to night during a total eclipse, it’s an otherworldly tableau you can’t miss. To truly embellish this celestial spectacle, immerse yourself in vibrant local celebrations and time your trip with other significant happenings.

Cultural Events and Local Attractions

While awaiting the solar dance in the sky, steep yourself in the local history and cultural festivals of North America (or any other continent!).

Natural wonders make for a stellar pre-eclipse excursion.

Combining Eclipse Travel with Other Events

Time your eclipse expedition to coincide with a plethora of other events for an all-encompassing escape.

Our Incredible Eclipse Experience in October 2023

Our “eclipse chasing” started a few years ago, when older daughter read Every Soul a Star. It peaked our interest for seeing an eclipse, and I made reminders to look for lodging one year in advance of each eclipse.

For the annular (or “ring of fire”) solar eclipse on October 14, 2023, we headed to Cortez, Colorado. The small town, tucked in the southwest corner of Colorado near Mesa Verde National Park, offered us stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.

We arrived a couple days before the annular solar eclipse to explore the area and get familiar with our viewing spot (which was right outside the door of our lodging!).

We visited ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde by day, and returned in the darkness of night to stargaze in the dark night sky.

Can you see the Big Dipper?????

On the day of the eclipse, we joined other excited eclipse chasers right at our motel.

As the moon slowly passed in front of the sun, we could feel the temperature drop and see the light dim.

The birds got quiet, and so did we.

And as it reached totality, our breath was taken away by the sight of a perfect ring of fire in the sky.

The entire experience was unforgettable, and we couldn’t have asked for a better location to witness such an incredible natural phenomenon.

We went on to spend time in some of southwest Colorado’s hot springs!

It was also Part 1 of 2 of what was dubbed the “Great American Eclipse” (2 solar eclipses happening over the U.S. within 6 months of each other). Read on for Part 2 of 2!

Our Unforgettable Total Eclipse Experience in April 2024

Quitman, Texas, was our destination as our eclipse tourism continued for the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Located in the beautiful Piney Woods region of East Texas, Quitman provided us with a perfect spot to witness totality.

Before the big day, we explored the surrounding area and visited some local attractions.

It turns out that Lake Fork is the #1 bass fishing lake in the United States! Who knew?

We also couldn’t resist indulging in some delicious southern cuisine at the local restaurants. Sunday lunch buffet, anyone?

But nothing could compare to the moment when totality arrived and we were immersed in complete darkness, surrounded by the breathtaking sight of the sun’s corona.

It was a surreal experience that is hard to put into words.

Many locations on the path of totality for this eclipse had cloudy weather, including us. However, just minutes before totality, the clouds dispersed, and we saw the entire thing!!!!!

The community of Quitman also made our eclipse experience even more special with their warm hospitality and eagerness to share this once-in-a-lifetime event with us.

I gotta tell you, it’s mighty nice being called “ma’am.” You won’t find that many places in SoCal.

We left Quitman with memories that will last a lifetime and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of nature and the wonder of celestial events.

While we didn’t have any fancy photography equipment (just iPhones & a GoPro), check out this video to experience the eclipse with us in real time!

BONUS: Post-eclipse, we were able to attend a Texas Rangers game and prove to our children that “Deep in the Heart of Texas” is a real song, not just made up by me. Yee-Haw! Thank you, Rangers!

Frequently Asked Questions

Embarking on an eclipse-chasing journey is quite the adventure, but the key to transforming it from a simple outing to an awe-inspiring experience hinges on the nitty-gritty of planning. Here are some pointed answers to streamline your voyage to the next solar eclipse.

How can I pick the prime spot to witness an eclipse?

Check out these websites for great info on the next total solar eclipse (& other future eclipses around the world):

What unique phenomena can I expect during a solar eclipse event?

Witness subtle yet thrilling phenomena such as the ‘diamond ring effect,’ where the last rays of sun create a dazzling illusion just before totality, and the ethereal ‘Baily’s beads,’ which occur as sunlight streams through valleys on the moon’s surface.

What are the must-have items to pack for a solar eclipse viewing adventure?

Essentials include certified solar viewing glasses to protect your eyes, a camera with a solar filter for capturing the moment, and layers of clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly during totality.

Also, consider a portable chair or blanket for comfort during the wait.

And, be sure to wear sunscreen!
