Do AirTags work internationally?
You’re probably wondering if AirTags work internationally. The answer is…it depends!
We did the research for you and found that AirTags do work internationally, but with a few caveats.
Let’s take a look.
How do AirTags work?
AirTags from Apple operate as follows: they broadcast a secure Bluetooth signal, which may be detected by nearby iOS devices on the Find My network.
In other words, the vast amount of worldwide iDevices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) is what makes AirTags work.
The more Apple devices, the better your chances of finding an item with an attached AirTag.
Do AirTags work without WiFi?
Yes, Apple’s AirTag can work without WiFi.
They utilize Bluetooth signals to communicate with other devices, so as long as the AirTag is within range of another iOS device, it can share its location.
That location is then sent to iCloud (which would require WiFi or cellular service), which then allows you to see your AirTag in Apple’s Find My app on your Apple device.
How far away to AirTags work?
Does an AirTag work from far away?
Apple doesn’t seem to mention exactly how far away an AirTag works, but normal Bluetooth range should be taken into account when connecting accessories.
It’s important to note that 33 feet (10 meters) would be considered the maximum with a clear line of sight between the AirTag and the iPhone.
Once you are beyond that distance, your iPhone or Apple Watch can even notify you that you’ve been separated from your AirTag.
Do AirTags work inside luggage?
Yes, my experience shows that AirTags will work inside luggage.
I’ve become one of the increasing number of AirTag owners.
I’ve traveled with them inside my luggage both domestically and internationally, and they were detectable everywhere I went, even when they were in the cargo hold of the airplane.
I actually don’t recommend attaching them to the outside of your luggage, even with special luggage tags, as the likelihood of the small device getting lost or stolen is much higher.
Placing one inside each of your personal items, or other important items, is a better option.
Do AirTags work with Android?
The answer here is kind of maybe.
Apple created an app for the Google Play Store called Tracker Detect.
It is supposed to help Android devices track AirTags.
Reviews are mixed, however, and at the very least, it’s not nearly as easy as using an Apple mobile device.
What about Precision Finding?
Precision Finding is a newer feature that only works on a compatible Apple device (iPhone 11 and beyond, with iOS 14.5 and beyond).
It utilizes Ultra Wideband chip technology to help you find your AirTag more precisely.
When you are nearby one of your AirTags, you can use the Precision Finding feature to see exactly how far away it is in real time (it’s precise location, of course) and which direction you need to go to find it.
Are AirTags rechargeable?
No, AirTags are not rechargeable.
They use a CR2032 coin-type battery, which is the same type of battery used in many small electronics like remote controls and key fobs.
Apple says that an AirTag’s battery should last for about a year under normal conditions, but your mileage may vary.
It’s a good idea to have a few CR2032 batteries on hand, just in case.
So, do Apple AirTags work internationally?
If you are in one of many parts of the world where Apple devices are plentiful, then yes, AirTags will work just fine for you.
However, if you’re in a less populated area or a country that doesn’t have many iPhone users, your AirTag’s usefulness may be limited.
In other words, can an AirTag be found anywhere?
If there are a lot of Apple devices around, yes. If there aren’t, then no.
Does AirTag have GPS?
According to Apple’s website [apple.com/airtag], AirTags use “Bluetooth for proximity finding, [an] Apple-designed U1 chip for Ultra Wideband and Precision Finding, [and] NFC tap for Lost Mode.”
These technologies are the drivers for helping you find a missing item, lost item, or to utilize the security features built into Apple’s AirTag.
Do AirTags have a monthly fee?
No, AirTags do not have a monthly fee.
Once you purchase the AirTags, they should work, as long as you have connected them to your iDevice, and they have a working battery.
How much do AirTags cost?
Generally, AirTags cost $29 for one, and $99 for a four-pack.
However, you can often find sale prices through Amazon, Target, or other retailers.
As far as Bluetooth trackers go, for a small item tracker, AirTags are pretty easy to setup with your Apple ID, and they look cool!
SBT Summary: Do Apple AirTags work internationally?
